Join us in honoring and respecting the diverse voices and traditions of Indigenous peoples as we strive for a more equitable and connected future.

We are proud to announce our partnership with Saugeen Driftwood Inc., a local non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the natural beauty and environmental sustainability of the Saugeen region.

Saugeen Driftwood Inc. has a remarkable achievement under their belt – the establishment of a high-speed, fibre-optic network in collaboration with Saugeen First Nation. Prior to this initiative, the community had limited access to low-speed DSL and dial-up connections. Recognizing the need for improved services, Joel Solomon, Junior ICT for Saugeen First Nation, led the research to explore alternatives for high-speed connectivity.

The pursuit of a fibre-optic network led Saugeen First Nation to FibreXpress, a Commercial Data Solution Service Company based in Holstein, Ontario. Through a collaborative effort, the network was successfully built entirely underground, ensuring durability, ease of management, and minimal environmental disruption.

Funding from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Industry Canada, and other local sources, along with revenue from broadband services, supported the construction of the network. Community members were actively involved, receiving training to install and maintain the infrastructure. Ryan Kewagesnig, a Saugeen community member, obtained skills in cable handling and splicing, enabling future expansion as needed.

With Saugeen First Nation being the owner and operator of the network, they have taken on the responsibility of billing, connections, and maintenance. This ownership allows them to provide broadband and Voice over IP services to band members at a lower cost. Additionally, local summer cottages also benefit from the network, contributing to a sustainable business model.

The impact of this collaborative project goes beyond connectivity. Businesses now have the capability to effectively run point-of-sale and security systems, administration can successfully utilize video conferencing, and young people studying off-reserve have access to online research and can stay connected with their peers.

At EH!Tel, we recognize the significance of such initiatives, which align with our commitment to community and environmental well-being. By partnering with Saugeen Driftwood Inc., we aim to support their ongoing efforts to preserve the natural treasures of the region while providing reliable telecommunications services to our customers.
